Money is often seen as a taboo topic, especially in personal finance. Many people avoid discussing it because they fear it will lead to disagreements. However, I've found that the more we talk about this touchy topic, the more we understand each other’s perspectives. This understanding can help us use money as a tool to create a more fulfilling life. Often, it's not the actual dollars and cents that hold us back, but our beliefs and attitudes towards money that impede our progress.

What is the Scarcity Mindset?

Simply put, it is the thought that a day can come, and all your money will be gone. Therefore, it is best to be possessive and protect it as best as possible.

This mindset can prevent us from taking risks, investing in ourselves, or pursuing opportunities that could lead to financial growth.

Now, I am not saying that this mindset is all bad. Many of us would have seen this type of mindset in our childhood. Whether from our parents or other family members. I used to wonder how my mom could stretch food for the family. My dad would make rice porridge the next morning because we were not wasting last night’s pot of rice.

Undoubtedly, this mindset played a vital role in helping us survive. Research shows that this stems a lot further than our parents, but with the hunter gatherers, when they didn’t know where they would find their next meal. This mindset has passed on for generations because it helped us to survive.

Scarcity Mindset prevents us from taking risk and enjoying life.

Signs of Scarcity Mindset

While the scarcity mindset may have helped our ancestors survive, it can also limit our growth in today’s world. It often leads to a constant focus on what we lack, which can cause us to miss out on opportunities for financial and personal growth. This mindset can manifest in various ways, such as:

  1. Hoarding Money: The fear of running out of money may lead you to hoard it excessively, making it difficult to invest in your future or even enjoy the present.

  2. Avoiding Financial Risks: You might hesitate to invest in opportunities that could potentially improve your financial situation because you fear losing what little you have.

  3. Constant Worrying: Even with a stable income or savings, you might still worry about financial security, always fearing that an unexpected expense could derail your life.

Shifting Mindset

Breaking free from the scarcity mindset requires a shift in perspective. Instead of focusing on what we lack, we can choose to focus on what we have and what we can control. We can cultivate a different mindset focusing on gratitude and recognizing the abundance of resources and opportunities available to us.

To begin this shift, start by identifying your unique strengths and talents. Trust in your ability to create the life you desire, independent of external circumstances. This shift in mindset is about slowly letting go of fear and embracing the opportunities that surround you. It’s about recognizing your worth and potential and understanding that growth comes from taking calculated risks and making informed decisions. Don’t worry, in future posts we will discuss more about steps that you can take to make the shift.

Moving Forward

The scarcity mindset served a purpose in the past, but it can hinder your financial and personal growth today. By reframing your thoughts and beliefs, you can break free from this limiting mindset and open yourself up to new possibilities. Embrace a mindset of abundance, focus on what you can control, and trust in your ability to create the life you want.

Reflective Questions:

●       Have you ever hesitated to invest in yourself or pursue a new opportunity because of financial fears?

●       What beliefs about money did you inherit from your family, and how have they shaped your financial decisions?

By asking yourself these questions, you can start to unravel the scarcity mindset and move toward a more abundant and fulfilling life.
